Help! Permesso di Soggiorno in Florence

Are you wondering aimlessly around the city looking for someone to tell you just how and what you need to do for your permesso di soggiorno? Well, I will try and give you some easy steps to follow.

1. What is a permesso di soggiorno?

A permesso di soggiorno, or permit of stay, is a document needed by non-EU residents that want to stay in Italy over 3 months. You MUST have a visa from the Italian Embassy or Consulate from your country before you enter into Italy.

2. I am an EU citizen, do I need a permesso di soggiorno?

No, you do not. However you do need to declare yourself with the police and tell them where you are staying and the allotted time you will be staying in Italy. This document is called a Dichiarazione di Presenza and you will need to have a copy of your passport stapled to the form. You will need to go to the Questura in via Zara to submit it or send it by mail to the Questura with a receipt. A form must be filled out for every member of your party. If you are renting an apartment or staying in a hotel they may do it for you. Make sure you ask.

Here is a link to the form:

3. Where to I need to go for my Permesso di Soggiorno?

You can go to the Immigration Office in via della Fortezza...or as I suggest...any Post Office with the Amico booth.

4. What forms and documents do I need for my Permesso di Soggiorno?

If going to the post office, make sure you go before hand to get a permesso kit. If going to the central post office in Piazza della Repubblica there is a desk on your right hand side who will give the the permesso kit. You will need to take this kit, fill it out, and add the appropriate documents to it before you actually go to the post office. Most first time permesso holders will fill out Modulo 1. All of the other Moduli can be thrown out. You will also have several other forms inside of the envelope. These forms are informational and are to help you with the specific codes that you need to enter into the form. If you have children you can add them on the remaining pages in the back of the modulo. You do not need to fill out a new form for each one.

Here are the things you must have:

-A marca da bollo of €14.62 which can be purchased a Tabacchi shop. This sticker will need to be placed at the top of you modulo.

-There will also be a short and wide form which is a 'bolettino' or bill that you need to pay at the time of your permesso, it is included inside the kit. The total for this bill is 27.50 plus a couple of euros extra processing fee.

check out this link for a pdf of the form: www.portaleimmigrazione.it/immigrazionenet/docs/PSE/PSE.pdf

-A photocopy of EVERY page of your passport, including the front and back cover

-An extra copy of your visa

-A copy of your health insurance stating that you have coverage abroad. ( if you don't have health coverage you can ask for information when you get your kit. The post office sells a special insurance for foreigners.)

-Proof of financial support. ( A bank statement with your bank number blacked out and/or the front of your credit card.)

-(for students) A letter of acceptance into your school with the official stamp of the school. A photocopy is sufficient.

-(for parents without one of their spouses) You will need a notarized letter from your spouse stating that you have permission to take your child/children out of the country.

-Proof of Residence ( normally an authorized and registered contract...if you are studying in Florence and your school is providing housing, you will not need this document.)

-(if here for business) A letter from you employer stating your employment in Italy.

5. So I have all of my documents...now what?

Now you will need to go to either the Immigration office or the post office to submit them. At the post office you will take a number from the number distributer for the 'Amico' booth and wait your turn. You will be expected to pay a shipping fee for the envelope which is around €30. Make sure to bring cash as they do not accept credit cards or non Italian cash cards. When your number is called an official will go through all of your paperwork to make sure you aren't missing anything. Then they will ask you see your original passport to verify it with the copied on you submitted. They will then ask you to pay all of your expenses for the permesso-€27.50+€30. If you have the health insurance form you will pay this now as well. When they are finished they will ask you to sign a form, in which you will also get a copy of. This form will have the date of your appointment at the immigration office. When they are all finished they will give you a form with a silver hologram on it. This is your temporary permesso and you will need to carry it with you at all time.

If you are going to the immigration office...the process will be fairly similar...but much much longer. Be ready to spend the whole day at the office.

6. So I got my hologram and my date at the immigration office, now what?

Now you will need to get 4 passport photos of yourself. When the date and time arrive you will go to the immigration office in via della fortezza where you will be interviewed by an official. The official will ask you some questions and take your finger prints. You need to make sure you bring your appointment sheet, you hologram form, you passport, and your photos. Failing to do so will only result in you wasting your time. They may or may not give you your permesso the same day, but you will have an idea of when you are to receive it.

I hope this helps!
